Overview
Ol Pejeta is a private, not-for-profit conservancy in Laikipia, fenced for security and run as a working sanctuary rather than a traditional open reserve. It holds the largest population of black rhino anywhere in East Africa, protected by round-the-clock ranger patrols, and it is where the world's last two northern white rhino live under permanent guard, the final animals of a subspecies that could not be saved from extinction in the wild.
Because the boundary is fenced, Ol Pejeta can support big predators alongside the rhino without the usual conflict with surrounding livestock country.
The conservancy also runs a chimpanzee sanctuary, home to chimps rescued from the illegal pet and bushmeat trade elsewhere in Africa, none of them native to Kenya but all given permanent refuge here.

Best time to visit
Visitable year-round; the dry months of June through October and January through February give the easiest driving and clearest views.
Getting there
Around three hours by road from Nairobi via Nanyuki, or a 45-minute scheduled flight from Wilson Airport to the conservancy's own airstrip.
