4-Day Masai Mara & Lake Nakuru

Overview

This itinerary breaks the drive to the Mara into two shorter legs by routing through Lake Nakuru National Park, which sits inside the Rift Valley escarpment roughly three hours from Nairobi. It's a fenced park with its own black and white rhino, and depending on rainfall and lake levels, flamingos along the shallows in varying numbers.

From Nakuru we continue on to the Mara for two full days, which is where this itinerary puts its weight: the rhino and lake stop is a strong addition on the way through, but the Mara days are built the same way as our 3-Day Classic, with a proper midday break at camp between drives.

Day by day

  1. 01

    Nairobi to Lake Nakuru

    We leave Nairobi in the morning and climb up over the Rift Valley escarpment, with a stop at one of the viewpoints along the way before dropping down to Nakuru town and into the park. The afternoon is a game drive around the lake shore and acacia woodland, looking for both black and white rhino, buffalo and, lake levels permitting, flamingo.

    Nakuru to the Mara

    A short morning drive to close out our time at Nakuru, then we head southwest through Narok to reach the Mara reserve by mid-afternoon. We go straight into an afternoon game drive on arrival rather than waiting until the next morning, since there's still good light left in the day.

  3. 03

    Full day in the Mara

    A complete day inside the reserve: an early morning drive, a break at camp through the heat, and an afternoon session that runs until the light fades. This is the day I keep flexible, moving between the river tree lines, the open plains and the conservancy edges depending on where sightings have been building.

  4. 04

    Morning drive and departure

    One last early game drive before breakfast, then the drive back to Nairobi, arriving by early evening.

Best time to visit

Lake Nakuru is a year-round park with no strong seasonal draw beyond lake levels; for the Mara leg, late June through October brings the best odds on the migration, while January through March is drier and quieter.

Common questions

What vehicle do we travel in?

A 4x4 safari Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, used for all four days including the drive between parks. It may be shared with other guests on the same route unless a private vehicle is requested at booking.

Are park fees included for both parks?

Yes, both Lake Nakuru and Masai Mara entry fees are included for the days you spend inside each. Anything outside the two parks, such as a Kenya entry visa, is not included.

Will we see the migration on this trip?

Only if it's in the reserve during your travel dates. The migration follows rainfall and grazing rather than a calendar, so we treat any river crossing as a bonus rather than something we can schedule around your two Mara days.

Is this a lot of driving?

There's more road time than a Mara-only trip, since Nakuru adds a leg, but splitting the journey into Nairobi–Nakuru and Nakuru–Mara keeps each individual drive shorter than the direct run, and neither day is purely a travel day, both include a game drive.

Over the Masai Mara

The Mara is where balloon safaris in Kenya started and it remains the classic flight: open plains, the river courses picked out by their tree lines, and game visible below in a way no vehicle can show you. Between roughly July and October, when the migration herds are in the reserve, the view from the basket takes in a scale of movement that is genuinely hard to grasp from the ground.

You are collected from camp in the dark and driven to the launch site, arriving while the crew are still inflating the envelope. Take-off is at first light, which is the whole point: the air is calmest then, and the low sun puts long shadows behind everything below you.

The flight runs roughly an hour, drifting with whatever wind there is rather than steering, so no two flights follow the same line. Height varies through the flight, from just above the treetops to a few hundred metres up.

Where the balloon lands, the ground crew are already setting up breakfast, cooked in the open and eaten at the landing site before you are driven back to camp. Most guests are back in time for the rest of the morning.

Worth knowing

  • Flights go at dawn and are weather dependent. Wind or low cloud cancels them, and that call belongs to the pilot on the morning, not to us.
  • Baskets are small and fill early in high season, so this is worth adding when you book the safari rather than deciding once you have arrived.
  • It is a genuinely early start, normally a pre-dawn pickup from camp.

Who flies it

The flight itself is run by a licensed balloon operator with its own pilots and civil aviation approval, not by us. What we do is book your seats, make sure the pickup lines up with where you are staying and what your itinerary is doing the rest of that day, and sort it out with the operator if the weather moves your flight.
